When to see a hernia surgeon?
A protruding lump or abdominal pain can be the first sign of a hernia. If you are male or 50 years old and above, your risk of contracting hernia is significantly higher.
During your first consultation, Dr Ng will conduct a comprehensive examination to access your hernia condition. He may also require pre-operative reports and CT scans from any previous abdominal surgeries.
A hernia repair surgery is usually our recommended treatment option, as it is considered to be both safe and effective.

What type of treatment is suitable for me?
A basic hernia repair surgery or herniorrhaphy involves making an incision at the site of the hernia and returning the hernia to its original position. There have been cases where the hernia is too large to be pushed back, and nylon meshes are employed to keep the hernia in place. Dr Ng will access the appropriate type and size of mesh to use.
If you prefer lesser downtime and a faster recovery, we recommend the laparoscopic hernia repair surgery. With this technique, smaller incisions are made, resulting in less pain and a smoother recovery.
Each hernia repair surgery takes about 45 to 90 minutes to complete and is performed under anaesthesia. For patients who are older and/or frail,

What is the post-surgery aftercare like?
After hernia repair, you can be discharged on the same day with minimal pain and discomfort. You can expect to resume normal activities whenever you feel ready and if there is no noticeable pain. Most of our patients return to work in a week’s time.
Dr Ng will also advise you on certain lifestyle changes that you can adopt, including restricting tedious lifting activities and a better diet plan.
